HAMPTON STREET, 5:21 PM (SELF-PORTRAIT AS SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT) by LAUREN ELMA FRAMENT

i built a glass box
with a tornado inside.

at thirteen years old,
i knew this was more honest

than the mirror’s possession,
& here i am, nine years later—

a windstorm of a girl inside glass,
nothing but dark & hail in my eyes

& from my mouth, a conduit of clouds
opening toward the sky.
